Every memory of Mare Vitalis, again. Kid A came out around this time and I listened to these two incessantly, and whether or not these two albums are actually in conversation they definitely were for me. But also the full show I saw in Chicago with Kim on what must have been the 10 year anniversary tour, and what might be a false memory that they played "Saved by the Bell" episodes during a break between Volume I and II. Discovering that my friend Isaiah loves this album, too. Learning to play "Mile Marker": the shapes (and colors) of that descending melody on the outro, which I still subconsciously play every time I listen to the album or just think of it, my left fingers on the "fretboard" of my right palm playing each note. My concept, in 2001, of what music could be growing a little, seemingly every day: delay can be used like this, noise can play this much of a role in a song, a band like this can put this much space in their songs. I still try to make my own music like these guys sometimes, I think. I love this album the whole way through, the rare double album that I don't skip a single song.
